The (Social) Developmental Stages in dogs
Puppies go through several socialization stages from birth until about 12 weeks old, including the prenatal phase (before birth), neonatal phase (0–13 days), transitional phase (13–21 days), awareness phase (21–28 days), and the primary socialization phase (3 to 12 weeks), during which they develop various senses, emotions, and stress regulation skills.
What is Puppy Culture?
Puppy Culture is an intensive, largely science-based program that we use as breeders to guide our puppies through early socialization — from the time they are born until they leave for their new homes. The goal is to give each puppy the very best possible start in life by building strong foundations before they go to their new families. Of course, socialization doesn’t stop there!
Why Is This Program Important?
Fear as an emotion begins to develop around week 5, with the first fear period typically occurring around week 8. The Puppy Culture program helps us identify and navigate these stages and provides both us and future puppy owners with tools to guide each pup — individually and as a group — through them successfully.
It’s best to invest in socialization before any problems arise!
Our puppy program covers many aspects, including Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), habituation to sounds and touch, providing enrichment activities, coordination and balance exercises, encouraging recovery after startle responses, attention to toilet training, crate training, routines, new social encounters, leash walking practice, and much more.
